Bridging the Bench: Cross-Training Between Histology and a Mohs Laboratory

Histology and Mohs laboratories share many common skill sets but differ in workflow, tissue handling, techniques, and the clinical roles they require; thoughtful cross-training is essential. This presentation explores how histology professionals can successfully transition between traditional histology and Mohs histotechnology while recognizing that competency in one setting does not automatically translate to competency in the other.

The presentation examines skillsets that can transfer between histology and Mohs laboratory environments. It identifies techniques that require additional training, as well as common challenges encountered when histology technicians cross-train in Mohs. Emphasis is placed on specimen handling, orientation, embedding, sectioning, staining, quality assessment, documentation, workflow, and competency evaluation. Practical strategies for developing a structured cross-training program are also discussed.

Objectives:

• Compare the workflow, techniques, and quality expectations of traditional histology and Mohs histotechnology.  

• Identify technical skills that readily transfer between histology and Mohs practice and those that require specialized cross-training.  

• Describe key differences in specimen orientation, embedding, sectioning, staining, and tissue evaluation that can affect successful transition between the two laboratory environments.  

• Recognize common challenges and potential errors encountered when histology professionals transition into Mohs practice and when Mohs technicians transition into traditional histology.  

• Develop a structured cross-training approach incorporating hands-on training, competency assessment, documentation, and ongoing evaluation.
